While excess all-cause death rates in the most-vaccinated states significantly exceeded those of many peer countries amid Omicron, those states saw significantly lower all-cause than COVID-19 death rates in that wave (29/100,000 and 47/100,000, respectively). In the 10 most-vaccinated states, however, excess all-cause death rates were similar to or less than that of several peer countries during both Delta and Omicron. ![]() ![]() But COVID-19 death rates were significantly lower in the 10 states with the highest vaccination coverage (73% coverage 75 deaths/100,000 people) than those in the 10 least-vaccinated states (52% coverage 146/100,000).Įxcess all-cause mortality in the United States exceeded COVID-19 mortality (145/100,000) and that of peer countries, as did excess all-cause death in the 10 US states with the lowest vaccine uptake. US per-capita COVID-19 deaths overall and in both state subgroups significantly exceeded those of all peer countries, with 370,298 COVID-19 deaths (112/100,000) during Delta and Omicron (61/100,000 and 51/100,000, respectively). The other peer countries were Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and others in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The other bottom-tier states were (from lowest to highest vaccination rate) Wyoming, Mississippi, Louisiana, Idaho, Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Dakota.ĬOVID-19 vaccination rates in peer countries ranged from a low of 64% in Israel to 82% in South Korea. Vaccination rates in the 10 least-vaccinated states ranged from a low of 48.9% to 53.4% in Indiana, for an average 52% coverage. The other top-tier states were (from lowest to highest vaccination rate) New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Connecticut, Maine, and Rhode Island. Two-dose COVID-19 vaccination rates in the 10 most-vaccinated US states as of Jan 1, 2022, ranged from 71.3% in Washington, DC, to 79.0% in Vermont, for an average of 73% coverage. For both periods, they estimated potential US lives saved if the country had experienced the death rates seen in peer countries. To estimate excess all-cause deaths, the researchers compared mortality in each period with that in 2015 to 2019. The COVID-19 per-capita death rate was calculated for the Delta variant from (week 26), to (week 51), and for Omicron from (week 52), to Ma(week 12). The team analyzed the US COVID-19 death rate, the all-cause death rate, and vaccination data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and, for other countries, mortality data from the World Health Organization, all-cause mortality data from the OECD, and vaccination data from Our World in Data. Researchers from the Brown School of Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania compared the United States overall, the 10 most- and least-vaccinated states, and 20 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with a population exceeding 5 million and a per-capita gross domestic product higher than $25,000 in 2021. The United States had 155,000 to 466,000 more deaths than peer nations in the second half of 2021 and early 2022, the investigators estimated. COVID-19 exacted a higher infection-related and excess all-cause death toll from the United States than from 20 peer countries throughout the pandemic but had less of an impact in the most-vaccinated states in the Delta and Omicron surges, suggests a study published late last week in JAMA. ![]() Move files to different folders: If a file you’re working on isn’t located in the right folder in the Finder, you can move it by dragging the proxy icon to the destination folder.Open a folder of files: If you have a folder of text files you want to open in BBEdit or a collection of images to browse in GraphicConverter, you can drag a folder’s proxy icon to the BBEdit or GraphicConverter Dock icon.Open files in non-default apps: Many standard document types can be opened by multiple apps, so if you’re looking at a JPEG file in Preview, for instance, but you want to open it in Affinity Photo, you can drag the JPEG’s proxy icon to Affinity Photo’s Dock icon. ![]() Here are some real-world uses that TidBITS readers recommended in our poll: After all, once you ensure that proxy icons are always visible, they’re right in front of you in window title bars, just waiting to be dragged. What’s interesting about proxy icons, however, is that their ready accessibility means you can use them in situations where working with a Finder icon wouldn’t be worth the effort. They’re called “proxy” icons for just that reason-they stand in for the real thing. The simple answer to that question is anything you can do with standard icons in the Finder. While there may be an accessibility argument for the visibility of proxy icons, they’re a longstanding functional part of the macOS experience for everyone and shouldn’t be hidden. Apple inappropriately relegates this setting to System Settings/Preferences > Accessibility > Display > Show Window Title Icons. It was undoubtedly an attempt to make the Mac interface look simpler, but it came at the cost of discoverability, like so many of Apple’s interface changes.Ī defaults write command made it possible to reduce the length of time you had to hover over the window title before the proxy icon appeared, but only in macOS 12 Monterey did Apple acknowledge the overall wrong-headedness of this change and provide an option to keep the proxy icon visible at all times (see “ TipBITS: Always Show Window Proxy Icons ,” 26 March 2022). That’s because Apple chose to hide the proxy icon in Big Sur by default, revealing it only when you moved your pointer over the window title or clicked in that area. Those who weren’t already proxy icon users before macOS 11 Big Sur are forgiven for not noticing them. ![]() Dragging the proxy icon to another app or location has the same effect as dragging a standard Finder icon. Proxy icons, or as Apple now calls them, “window title icons,” are tiny icons that sit next to the window title in Finder windows and windows from document-focused apps. Allow me to persuade you to give proxy icons a try! Even the number of respondents was down from previous polls, with just under 500 votes. The poll results backed up my expectations, with only 40% of respondents using proxy icons regularly and another 17% using them occasionally. They’re one of my favorite macOS features, and I was fully expecting that even many TidBITS readers wouldn’t use them, if only because of not knowing what they are or what they’re good for. Our first few Do You Use It? polls focused on prominent features that have starred in keynotes, been mentioned on macOS Web pages, and migrated between platforms.

The roots search for new places in the soil, aka the roots grow more, when they have to search for new places in the soil to get water. It was very hard for me, for some reason, to water only once every 7-8 days during veg but it has made a world of difference. Obviously I don't let the pot get bone dry at any point, but I for sure let the pots get nice and light before adding my 2 gallons. I used to simply overwater my plants out of fear that the soil was getting too dry but I'm seeing MUCH better results by watering less often. I still stick to 2 gallons at a time, that doesn't change at any point for me, just more frequently since the soil dries faster during flower due to the fact that the root system has fully established. (During the very early sprout stage I like to add about 1/4 of a water bottle to the area of the sprout every 3 days or so to make sure the sprout and it's roots don't get too dry) When flowering really hits, the plant starts drinking a lot more and the soil dries out for me about every 3 days or so. In my case it takes about 7-8 days until the pots are dry again during the sprout/veg stage. In terms how I often I water, here is what I do: before watering the first time, I lift up the pot a few times to get a good feel for how heavy the pot is when it is completely without water, and then I go ahead and add about 2 gallons of water into my 7 gallon fabric pots and right at about 2 gallons I start to see a little bit of run-off which is how I know the pot is nice and saturated. Watering increases throughout the grow but the 7 gallon pots seem to want about 2 gallons of water each time as long as you let the pots dry out properly. Yes with soil you want to be between 6.2-6.8, hence why I do 6.5 since it's right in the middle of that range. I then make sure to PH the water to about 6.5 and it's ready to use as needed. Find f ′ ( x ) f ′ ( x ) and evaluate it at g ( x ) g ( x ) to obtain f ′ ( g ( x ) ).To differentiate h ( x ) = f ( g ( x ) ), h ( x ) = f ( g ( x ) ), begin by identifying f ( x ) f ( x ) and g ( x ).Problem-Solving Strategy: Applying the Chain Rule An informal proof is provided at the end of the section. Now that we have derived a special case of the chain rule, we state the general case and then apply it in a general form to other composite functions. As we determined above, this is the case for h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ). At this point, we anticipate that for h ( x ) = sin ( g ( x ) ), h ( x ) = sin ( g ( x ) ), it is quite likely that h ′ ( x ) = cos ( g ( x ) ) g ′ ( x ). Thus, if we think of h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) as the composition ( f ∘ g ) ( x ) = f ( g ( x ) ) ( f ∘ g ) ( x ) = f ( g ( x ) ) where f ( x ) = f ( x ) = sin x x and g ( x ) = x 3, g ( x ) = x 3, then the derivative of h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) is the product of the derivative of g ( x ) = x 3 g ( x ) = x 3 and the derivative of the function f ( x ) = sin x f ( x ) = sin x evaluated at the function g ( x ) = x 3. In other words, if h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ), h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ), then h ′ ( x ) = cos ( x 3 ) lim x → a sin ( x 3 ) − sin ( a 3 ) x 3 − a 3 = lim u → a 3 sin u − sin ( a 3 ) u − a 3 = d d u ( sin u ) u = a 3 = cos ( a 3 ). Lim x → a sin ( x 3 ) − sin ( a 3 ) x 3 − a 3 = lim u → a 3 sin u − sin ( a 3 ) u − a 3 = d d u ( sin u ) u = a 3 = cos ( a 3 ). We can take a more formal look at the derivative of h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) by setting up the limit that would give us the derivative at a specific value a a in the domain of h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ). In addition, the change in x 3 x 3 forcing a change in sin ( x 3 ) sin ( x 3 ) suggests that the derivative of sin ( u ) sin ( u ) with respect to u, u, where u = x 3, u = x 3, is also part of the final derivative. First of all, a change in x x forcing a change in x 3 x 3 suggests that somehow the derivative of x 3 x 3 is involved. This chain reaction gives us hints as to what is involved in computing the derivative of sin ( x 3 ). ![]() We can think of this event as a chain reaction: As x x changes, x 3 x 3 changes, which leads to a change in sin ( x 3 ). Consequently, we want to know how sin ( x 3 ) sin ( x 3 ) changes as x x changes. We can think of the derivative of this function with respect to x as the rate of change of sin ( x 3 ) sin ( x 3 ) relative to the change in x. To put this rule into context, let’s take a look at an example: h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ). Instead, we use the chain rule, which states that the derivative of a composite function is the derivative of the outer function evaluated at the inner function times the derivative of the inner function. However, using all of those techniques to break down a function into simpler parts that we are able to differentiate can get cumbersome. When we have a function that is a composition of two or more functions, we could use all of the techniques we have already learned to differentiate it. In this section, we study the rule for finding the derivative of the composition of two or more functions. However, these techniques do not allow us to differentiate compositions of functions, such as h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) h ( x ) = sin ( x 3 ) or k ( x ) = 3 x 2 + 1. ) as well as sums, differences, products, quotients, and constant multiples of these functions. ![]() We have seen the techniques for differentiating basic functions ( x n, sin x, cos x, etc.
